Hurricane Ernesto Summary: Areas Affected and Economic Impacts
Hurricane Ernesto has become extratropical over the far reaches of the northern Atlantic Ocean. Here's a look at some of the modeled economic impacts for the main affected areas.
The greatest losses are projected to have occurred in Puerto Rico, with over 220 million USD in economic impact (Figure 1). Our web app, KinetiCast, also allows you to view this for admin 1/admin 2 level regions, corresponding to states and counties, respectively. By doing this we can see that the greatest economic impact occurred in San Juan, at 29 million USD (Figure 2).
Bermuda was also impacted by Hurricane Ernesto, sustaining a direct landfall for the first time since Hurricane Paulette in 2020. The peak winds on the island were estimated at 85-90 miles per hour, translating into a total economic impact of 72 million USD (Figure 3).
Today is August 20, and the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is in full swing. The majority of the season's activity should occur over the next 5-6 weeks, and with La Niña strengthening in the equatorial Pacific, we expect conditions to become only more favorable from here.
