Cyclone Biparjoy to Make Landfall near India/Pakistan Border
The nations of India and Pakistan are bracing for the year’s first impacts from a tropical cyclone [1]. Cyclone Biparjoy, currently classified as a very severe cyclonic storm, is currently forecast to make landfall sometime on the 15th of June, very close to the border with India and Pakistan. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal regions in both nations, as Biparjoy is expected to bring significant storm surges to the area [1]. The latest forecast graphics from KinetiCast™ are displayed below:
The forecast graphics from KinetiCastTM show that Biparjoy is expected to be a category 1-equivalent cyclone, with maximum sustained winds of 85-90 miles per hour, just prior to making a landfall. What is more significant is the storm surge, which could be as high as 6 to 9 feet in the region.
This area is no stranger to the impacts of tropical cyclones; however, the presence of infrastructure not built to withstand tropical cyclone hazards in the region means that when cyclones do occur, the impacts can be magnified. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that traditional mud and straw homes, which house the poorest in the nation, will be particularly vulnerable to damage or complete disintegration in high winds [1]. Disaster management personnel have already been deployed to areas that are forecast to be in the storm’s path [1].
